Set just above the water, The Lakehouse is the largest of three separate cabins at Wombat’s Den. Broad windows and a covered porch look across the lake towards the surrounding bush, making the landscape part of the stay from the moment you arrive.
Inside, two separate bedrooms give up to four adults plenty of room to share a few days away without giving up their own space. Gather around the fire, cook together, settle onto the porch or simply make The Lakehouse your base for exploring the property and the wider Gembrook area.
Wake up beside the lake
Open the curtains to the water, make coffee and take it out onto the porch while the property comes to life around you. Kangaroos may be grazing nearby, birds move between the trees and, on the right morning, mist hangs over the lake before lifting into the surrounding bush.
Beyond the cabin, around 35 acres of Wombat’s Den are waiting to be explored. Follow the walking tracks through the property, wander towards William Wallace Creek or listen for lyrebirds calling from the gullies adjoining Bunyip State Park.
You can head into Gembrook and the surrounding ranges when you feel like exploring further. Or come back to the cabin, light the fire, make dinner and watch the last of the daylight move across the water.
A little more room
The Lakehouse works particularly well when you’re travelling together but still want some space of your own.
The main bedroom has a king bed, while the second has a queen, with ceiling fans in both rooms. Between them, the central living and dining area gives everyone somewhere to come together, with the fireplace at its heart and broad windows looking towards the lake.
A full kitchen means you can cook properly when you want to stay in, while the covered porch extends the living space outside and makes an easy spot for breakfast, afternoon drinks or an evening spent watching the weather move through.
Beyond the cabin
A stay at The Lakehouse includes more than the space inside it. Wombat’s Den stretches across around 35 acres adjoining Bunyip State Park, with bushland, walking tracks, a rainforest creek and plenty of places where the property feels entirely your own.
Wildlife is part of life here too. Lyrebirds are regularly seen and heard around the property, alongside kangaroos, wombats and a remarkable variety of native birdlife.
